Teen Center Opens in Basement of Club

The Boys & Girls Club of Trenton has opened a center in its building at 212 Centre Street dedicated solely to the needs of its teen members. The "new" center is a renovated basement space that includes a career services center, an Internet café, and a lounge furnished with sofas, electronic games, and a big-screen TV.

Keystone Club members welcomed dozens of guests during the grand opening on Nov. 21. Among the visitors were John and Janet Kerney of The James Kerney Foundation, key funders of the teen renovation project.

"We are exceptionally grateful to the James Kerney Foundation for really making this project possible. If not for the foundation's support, we would not have been able to create this much-needed space for our teens," said David Anderson, executive director.

"The facility is really going to serve many purposes for our teens including a safe place to have downtime and as a setting to contemplate and prepare for college and their futures," Anderson added.

More than 60 teens kept the festivities going into the evening as they celebrated the opening of the Boys & Girls Club’s first teen center. It is expected that teen membership at the Boys & Girls Club will grow as a result of the center’s enhanced focus on job and career preparation.

LaShonna McRae, associate director of teen services, will be spending many of her evenings with teens in this new center.

"I’m excited that our teens now have a place of their own … where they can do college searches, learn about financial aid, and jobs – on their own or with our help. I plan to be very hands-on with them to provide the resources they need to move ahead and to reach their goals."
