Barrett, a senior at Trenton High School, garnered the coveted award during the annual Boys & Girls Club dinner. He will compete for the State Youth of the Year in May. Tyis Everett was selected as Junior Youth of the Year. She earned a $500 scholarship and will represent the Youth of the Year Program within the community over the coming year.
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community, and the Boys & Girls Club.
Barrett, who plans a career in accounting, coaches an elementary school basketball team and prepared the chess team for city-wide competition. He is an active member of Phoenix Keystone – the Boys & Girls Club’s teen service group – and is a corporal officer in the Junior ROTC.
Five seniors and four juniors competed in this year’s program which culminated on March 16 with a dinner in the Chauncey Conference Center at ETS. Highlight of the program was each nominee’s two-minute speech to a panel of judges and more than 150 parents and invited guests. Click here to support the Boys & Girls Club teen programs.
Before the dinner, each nominee underwent a series of interviews. Serving as judges were Zandra Combs, director of human resources at Tyco International; Geraldine Eure, assistant general counsel, Consolidated Edison; Jeff Frazier, vice president, Novo Nordisk and board member of the Boys & Girls Club; Lenora Green, director, ETS Social Investment Fund; Peter W. Gibson, newly-elected board member; and Ray Werts, vice president of sales at Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical.
The primary objective of the Youth of the Year Program is character development. Each teen participant was paired with an adult staff member in a mentoring relationship that provided individual guidance and encouragement. The Youth of the Year Program also provides opportunities for learning how to write essays that are well thought out and to develop public speaking skills. Among the qualities on which contestants were judged were personal essays and presentation.
