Boys & Girls Club Opens Fitness Center To Teens, Parents, and Community
With key supporters in attendance, the Boys & Girls Club of Trenton unveiled a new Teen & Family Fitness Center to the community at a grand opening celebration on May 30. In opening the facility, the Club makes a commitment to the health and wellbeing of its members, their parents, and local area residents.
“The goal of the fitness center is to improve the overall health of our members by increasing their daily physical activity and teaching them good nutrition and fitness habits,” says David E. Anderson, executive director. “A lot of the risk factors facing urban youth, such as obesity and diabetes, can be prevented with proper nutrition.”
The air-conditioned 800 sq. ft. fitness center – located in the Boys & Girls Club at 212 Centre Street – offers a wide selection of resistance training and cardiovascular equipment including two treadmills, two step-climbing machines, and two stationary bicycles.
Generous donations from Tyco International, Rick and Charisse Taft of Hopewell Township, the State of New Jersey, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) helped to transform the former storage room into an attractive new fitness center.
Among those in attendance at the grand opening were Shelley Stewart, Jr., a member of the Club’s board of directors and a vice president at Tyco; Moore Gates, Jr., BGCA board of governors member, and Mrs. Gates; the Taft family, and several members of the Trenton Club’s board of directors.
Membership is open to area residents and local workers who wish to join and abide by the rules of the Boys & Girls Club. Fees vary, with an adult membership costing $25 per month, and a teen membership at $5 per month. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with two hours set aside for teen use only.
