Korey Thompson
Korey Thompson, 14, appears to have special radar for finding opportunities that will help him to achieve his goals. Using that skill is how he came to be a member of the Boys & Girls Club. This spring, Korey signed up for Career Explorers at his high school. Now, he is one of the few 13- to 15-year-olds to be selected for a summer position at the Boys & Girls Club.
“Korey really took to Career Explorers. He never missed a class, did all of the homework assignments, and assumed a leadership role,” notes Melissa Sutton, career development specialist at the Boys & Girls Club. Korey will be among seven junior counselors this summer who will be conducting a peer reading program at the Gregory School, one of the Club’s program sites.
“I saw Job Ready as a way of staying out of trouble and getting a job,” Korey says. In addition to his Boys & Girls Club activities, Korey participates in the student government, played on the freshman basketball team, and is a member of the Junior ROTC at Trenton High School. He also is a member of the Cadwalader Asbury United Methodist Church.
Korey says that his mother, Collette Thompson, grandmother (also named Collette, in picture), and brother Frank, a 17-year-old track standout, are big factors in his life. And, Korey clearly appreciates the special role his grandmother plays in his success. A retired registered nurse for the State of New Jersey, Collette Thompson is largely responsible for driving Korey to and from the Boys & Girls Club and his many other activities.
“I support what the Boys & Girls Club is doing,” Mrs. Thompson says, “and I’m glad that Korey is involved in the community.”
